A minimum of 64 people were killed in a police operation against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's records.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts broke out when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

The informal settlements near the city's international airport is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Government representatives said at least 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
