A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled after the blast was apprehended not long after. All three have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area revealed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the access point and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed reporters, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
