Gamers Are Receiving an Upcoming Release in the Best Star Wars Series of All Time, Helmed by a Mass Effect Trilogy Veteran.

Star Wars aficionados are spoiled for options when it comes to stellar gaming adventures showcasing lightsabers, but the galaxy imagined by George Lucas is not just a battleground for fighting. Not many franchises have understood this more thoroughly than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was crafted in the old-school computer role-playing game style that made companies like Obsidian and BioWare legendary. Now, after multiple delays and setbacks, a major gaming showcase has revealed that players will soon be able to play a thematic heir to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Major Announcement

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is described as "a fresh single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the director of the original KOTOR, is leading it at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a ultimate Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that was made of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson stated. “Now, 25 years after we began developing that game, our goals are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an chance to investigate a modern vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an brand-new story written specifically to realize the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

A Welcome Surprise

The announcement is somewhat of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get pushed back with no date. However, rumors had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been in the works as recently as March 2025.

Here is the summary for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in conjunction with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

KOTOR's Enduring Impact

The classic role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are renowned for their narrative-focused, player-influenced, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they unintentionally established how people imagine the Old Republic age as a whole, even now. The games dared to question many aspects of Jedi lore that are often considered inarguable, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a far more grim direction by asking if the world might not be improved without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans long after their release, but the follow-up in particular is considered by some as one of the finest pieces of Star Wars media ever made.

The Future is Bright

And now, four years after seeing a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the similar spirit. Given the craving for complex games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's executed properly has the potential to be a massive hit.
