Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
