New England Warming More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The US region famous for its historical past, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-bound winters is experiencing a swift transformation. Fresh analysis indicates that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the planet.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The rate of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the continental United States, according to the study. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently accelerated significantly in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's accelerating," said a primary researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is moving in a new direction, after being largely consistent for millennia."
The analysis places the New England region among the fastest-warming zones in the world, together with the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the American South," the scientist added.
Study Approach and Findings
For the study, researchers analyzed three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet warming by around 1.3°C in the same period.
"This represents very fast warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.
Notable Warming Trends
- Nighttime temperatures are rising faster than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being eroded.
Marine Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary cause for this exceptional build-up of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The global seas are taking in the vast majority of the excess heat trapped by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then carried further inland by prevailing winds.
"The excess heat from global warming is being stored in the sea like a massive battery," said the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a recipient of that energy."
Impacts on Culture and Weather
Once seen as a relatively stable region, New England has experienced severe weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating floods and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic elements of local culture:
- Maple syrup production is being affected by changing seasonal patterns.
- Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or relocated multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of insufficient snow.
"I reside just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely disappeared from much of southern New England."
