Peak Pizza? Domino's Pizza CEO Departs Following Pivot Towards Chicken.

A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached peak pizza while broadening the franchise into fried chicken has been removed after conflicts with its directors.

Executive Transition

Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's looks for a permanent CEO.

Rennie, who was with the company for a substantial period, had aimed to redirect the UK's leading pizza takeaway chain towards chicken offerings, remarking earlier this month there was not “massive growth” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted poultry was the fastest-growing menu item in the international market.

Governance Tensions

Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the directors over his strategy and direction, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.

New Product Introduction

In September, the chain unveiled its poultry product line – which the former chief referred to as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.

While the company is still intending to launch it across its extensive network next year as scheduled, it considers fried chicken as an addition to its core pizza business.

Board Comment

The Domino's chair, the company chairman, commented: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are concentrating on identifying the right chief executive to oversee the systematic rollout of that growth strategy.”

Market Difficulties

Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said sales dipped by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it warned that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the period before the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.

Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain disclosed the shutting of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the company behind its British operations entered insolvency.

Health Efforts

Adapting to market shifts towards balanced diets, Domino's has introduced lower-calorie items, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of bakes below 400 calories as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a small has 909 calories.

Acting Leadership

The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the gambling company a well-known operator. It is understood that she does not want to assume the CEO position on a full-time basis.

She commented: “Our team has a multiple active development and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to implementing at a rapid rate.”

She said these comprised additional efforts on the company's logistics network and menu innovation, and its rewards program.

The pizza chain is also lacking a long-term finance director until March 16, when Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. For now, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
